I heard about Camp of The Woods a long time before I went. We lived next door to the Kane family for five years before they moved to Camp of the Woods full time. Every summer they would leave for longer and longer periods of time. During the summer I always wanted to go. Our parents talked about going for a week or two, but we never did. Then when the Kanes moved, suddenly going to Camp of The Woods was a lot more likely.
The first time I went to camp was in March of 2017. I was 14 years old. Camp season was still three months away and the lake was still frozen enough to ride snow machines on. We met the Bates and did pretty much nothing while our parents worked on the Barnhouse, which was the house the Kanes were moving into.
We came a few months later in July for two teen weeks and one junior week. I was 15 and stayed one week longer than my family for the junior week as staff. I was a team captain and from then on, I knew I wanted to come back for more junior weeks. Since then, I've been back twice. I have been a counselor, team captain, and maintenance guy. Out of all of them my favorite job is probably being counselor. But honestly, I just like being there.
Everything about camp gets me excited. I like the location, the people, and my favorite food there is probable the perogies or the mashed potatoes with roast beef. I enjoy everything from cleaning bathrooms with my friends to leading a cabin of kids with somebody I've never met. However, I especially love working with kids. I feel like God has called me to minister to them and I'm looking forward to coming back to camp this year
