COTW Lingo

Most summer camps have a lot of things in common such as energetic cabin leaders, fun games, and lots of time spent outside. Every camp does things a little differently though. Each camp has their own “lingo” to talk about things that happen at camp. If you, or your child, is a first time camper, we hope this post helps clarify some of our special vocabulary.

Tuck- Some other camps call this “canteen” or “trading post.” Our Tuck shop has candy, ice cream treats, pop, chips, and COTW souvenirs like hats, shirts, and sweatshirts. We encourage campers to wait until the end of the week to purchase camp merchandise, so there is a less chance of misplacing it before they go home, but they are able to purchase snacks each afternoon during the week. For our teen campers and mission campers, Tuck is also open in the evenings. Junior campers are limited to two items during tuck time. All snack items in the Tuck shop are $1 or less. If campers want to purchase items from the Tuck during the week, they are to turn in their Tuck money at registration. The Tuck shop will keep a record of purchases throughout the week, and any remaining money will be returned on Friday after our closing programs.

Slop Bucket- At each meal slop buckets are placed on each table. In order to help clean up go more quickly in the kitchen, everyone is asked to scrape any leftover food on their plate into the slop buckets before stacking their plates and cleaning up their tables. This makes clean up go much faster, though we don’t recommend spending much time looking in the slop buckets if you get squeamish about foods mixing together!

Devos- COTW is a Bible camp so each camp week we do our best to clearly communicate who Jesus is and how we can learn more about him. One way we talk about Jesus and the Bible is through our evening chapel times, where everyone comes together as a camp to sing songs, watch a skit, and hear someone speak about Jesus and why He matters. Another way we do this is through our nightly devotional times, or “Devo” times. When the day is almost done, and everyone has gotten ready for bed, cabin leaders lead a discussion relating to the evening chapel and give the campers opportunities to ask any questions they may have.

Specialized Activities- At registration on Monday, campers are able to pick four specialized activities that they want to participate in for an hour on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday morning. Some of these activities are canoeing, archery, rock climbing, ping-pong, Frisbee golf, crafts, paint ball! If campers aren’t able to sign up for all the ones they want, they may have the opportunity to do these activities with their cabins during cabin free time in the evenings.

Paintball

These are some of our most asked about terms. If we missed any, let us know!
